Using a recipe I found on the internet, I made some povidone-iodine mouthwash. This stuff kills 99.9% of viruses, bacteria and fungi. Three recent studies (here’s one) demonstrated it killed active Covid in five days and can be used as a prophylaxis.
What I like about the recipe is that it included studies about the ingredients and links to purchase them.
My friend Fritzy told me about Betadine povidone-iodine sore throat gargle and that she purchased it at her local Walgreens. While in Grand Rapids in August, we searched online for it. The only one available was at a store closest to us. It was $11 for an 8 oz. bottle. When I got home, I thought I’d check out stores near me. Two were available in a neighboring town. That’s when I started searching for a recipe. It shouldn’t be that hard to find, nor that expensive.
Thankfully, I took a bottle with me over the Labor Day weekend to our tiny cabin in northern Michigan. My youngest daughter, her husband and their two children, along with my 91-year-old mother, came up to hang out with my husband and me. It was cozy. My two-year-old granddaughter, the walking petrie dish, had a cough when she arrived, which was disclosed before the festivities began. She soon developed a low-grade fever. Shortly after that, we all began hitting the Betadine religiously. Turns out she had the hand, foot, mouth virus, which is very contagious. Guess what? None of us caught it.
Considering the fact that I knew I’d be furnishing the entire family with the mouthwash, I made a big batch — when I was finished, I had 11 bottles, 16 oz. each. I was trying to be funny with a label, but I’ve given a few random bottles to other people so it’s come in handy in terms of ingredients and dosage.
To make it easy for you, if you want to make it, here’s the recipe converted for 10% povidone to make it .5% Next time I’ll use less salt. Mix the sodium borate (Borax) in last…it gets frothy. By the way, Borax is another hidden gem…besides being an anti-fungal, it can help to detox your body, alleviates arthritis and osteoporosis and can cure mycoplasmosis. H/t to Fritzy for that info.
Mouthwash recipe
Yield: 11 16 oz bottles
20 cups (160 oz) distilled water
8 oz 10% povidone-iodine
1 c baking soda
1 c xylitol
1/2 to 1 c salt
1/3 c Borax
1 T Peppermint extract
Yield: 22 ounces
20 oz distilled water
1 oz 10% povidone-iodine
2 T baking soda
2 T xylitol
2 T salt
2 tsp Borax
1/2 tsp Peppermint extract
